Book XIV: Hera's Schemes
In book XIV, we see a positive advancement for the Achaians, but once again not without the help of one of the gods. Although this time, it came from a group effort from above. Hera decides to charm and sleep with Zeus, thus without Zeus' supervision of the battle, Poseidon is capable of helping the Achaians push for victory. This wouldn't have worked if it weren't for Aphrodite and Sleep giving Hera their charm and slumber. We can see the haste and excitement of this golden opportunity for the Greeks and gods as Sleep blurts out, "Have your way now, Poseidon! Help the Daanans, give them victory just for a little, while Zeus is asleep! I have drowned him in soft slumber myself - Hera has enticed him to bed with her!" It is a bit ironic how this has played out. Up to this point of the book, Zeus has had full command, and if Hera were to mention something to Zeus, it would not be of much importance and he would not pay much mind to it. In this instance however, the tables have turned for Hera, and she able to execute her plan effectively to help the Achaians. For when Zeus wants to help Hector and the Trojans, it is no problem and no big deal, but when he awakes and sees Poseidon on the battlefield, it becomes an absurdity. It is very interesting to see these characters interact throughout the book, especially the gods because of their power and capabilities they have that can create havoc, peace, etc. within seconds.
